Designing with Dignity: Interior Design Services for Individuals with Disabilities

At Design by Distinction, we believe everyone deserves to live in a space that feels safe, beautiful, functional, and tailored to their needs. Through our nonprofit initiative, Designing with Dignity, we are committed to providing inclusive, thoughtful interior design services specifically for individuals with disabilities and intellectual challenges.

Our mission is to improve the mental, emotional, and physical well-being of our clients by creating accessible and comforting environments—whether that’s a peaceful bedroom retreat, a sensory-friendly living room, or a fully adaptive kitchen or bathroom. Every design is created with empathy, intention, and the goal of enhancing daily life.

Why This Matters

For many individuals with physical or intellectual disabilities, traditional home layouts and furnishings simply don’t work. A poorly designed space can cause confusion, anxiety, discomfort, or even physical harm. Through purposeful design, we can help create environments that promote independence, peace of mind, and improved quality of life.

Our Services Include:

Service Availability & Funding Notice
At this time, our Intellectual Disability Design Program is part of a growing business initiative, and we are still in the process of raising funds to fully support its reach. Until adequate funding becomes available, our in-person design services will be limited to Memphis, Tennessee, and nearby communities in Mississippi. Funds are still needed for design services in these local states at this time also.

For clients outside of our local service area, we are pleased to offer e-design services for the Intellectual Disability Program. In these cases, we will provide concept floor plans, curated shopping lists, and design guidance at half the regular program rate. The hands-on implementation will be completed by the caregiver or a family member.

Our goal is to make thoughtful, functional, and beautiful spaces accessible to as many individuals and families as possible—starting locally and expanding as our funding grows.
